Our kids forgot to make Leprechaun traps, this year. When they got home from school, they discovered that the Leprechauns had ransacked their rooms (yes, more than usual!).

My oldest daughter’s trap was quite intricate, last year. It involved a shoe box, double-sided tape, and a net made of thread. I don’t remember what the bait was?

Hey Roy!
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you – these books are taking over!
I do find that I work best with two projects (or three, or four…) – even if I have a great project, after working for a certain amount of time on it, I always get a bit blah. Having another project on the go really helps me from losing steam overall, or getting stuck in the rest stage. I also find that by working on two projects, I end up finishing them faster!

You might even find that by having more than one thing going, your mind starts to realize it better bring good ideas to your attention quick, because it knows time is limited!

We play ocean sounds on repeat on the ipod at night. Mostly we are trying to create white noise for the boys, but it is good to know there are other benefits.

On our way out the door to school this morning, the kids spotted a hawk flying overhead (very unusual in urban Los Angeles). The hawk took up roost in a tree right in front of our house! Of course I have no photo to prove it, but we all felt kinda special to be in the presence of such awesomeness.

Thanks for stopping by, Mel! There is definitely something about bears, isn’t there? Watching them, they actually remind me of humans in ‘bear suits’, if that makes any sense. I’ve only seen 2 black bears, both in Algonquin Park here in Ontario – one mama with a little cub. Adorable. =)

If I had a totem animal it would be a bear. A black bear (the species, not the color).I have had many encounters with black bears (which all turned out just fine, unless you are the windshield wiper on my old truck).

Congratulations! Babies always make me stop and think about what changes they are likely to see, as they grow up. My grandmother has amazing stories of traveling in horse-drawn wagons to work in the Michigan logging camps, as a young girl. She has seen automobiles, airplanes, electricity, telephones – it’s mind boggling!

I relate most to a cat. I can be quiet and relaxed, content to curl up with a book in a warm spot and enjoy the easy life. Or I can be fixated and aggressive, swatting away things that are not important and pouncing on opportunities as they come. I can come across as warm and friendly, eager to please, or standoffish and aloof, keeping to myself. Maybe that is why I have four cats at home, because our purr-sonalities are somewhat alike!

I relate most to black bears. I don’t know why. Maybe its all the run-ins I’ve had with them–that always turn out fine. Maybe it’s the no-nonsense way they protect their cubs. Maybe it is their omnivorous nature–they are extremely adaptable and can roll with the punches. Maybe it is their insouciant nature. Possibly it is because they live in some of the most enviable places. Or just because they are so darn cute

I find that I relate to many animals in many ways, but the one I am most “in tune” with has to be the Red Kite. It is a glorious bird, quiet, un-aggressive and enjoys the company of others. The kite has had a very troubled past but has managed to regain its path in life and does so with dignity and grace.
Growing up I had my fair share of set backs but feel happy and content with the life I have now.
We also both seem to share a love for Wales! The UK kites retreated to a remote valley, not far from my home now, away from the cruelty and selfishness of mankind and managed to make a come back. I moved to Wales, from a large city, for much the same reasons and my life here is a happy and healthy one.
I now work at a red kite feeding station where I get the pleasure of their company on a daily basis and they are usually nearby to greet me when I drive home. I couldn’t imagine the skies without them.

Awesome! I remember doing this as a kid. My son did almost the same thing with a super-saturated sugar solution. Hung a string in it and as the water evaporated he was left with a string of sugar rocks.

Hi Jess,
As “lakeside” dwellers ourselves we have first-hand knowledge of just how industrious these critters can be!In fact our property shoreline is minus four or five trees over the past couple years from their forestry projects!It seems that our dog has decided that they are most welcome here (strange dog) and he no longer even alerts us to their presence… they just have free reign to do as they please and harvest whatever they need. (I think they are paying him off somehow!)

Ha! I went to grad school at U of Oregon, so I have to show preference to the duck post (sorry, Roy!)

I think about what the US, especially the Eastern US, would have looked like if beavers hadn’t been almost eradicated. They sure do dominate a landscape.

Hah! I’ve always thought that if we could hire beavers to do our construction work, we’d have far less hold-ups, breakdowns and delays! Efficient little buggers, that’s for sure.

Beavers are so cool – of course, my wife is an Oregon State alum – heh

They are quite industrious. I remember a backcountry coastal road that my friends and I traveled quite a bit, in Oregon’s Coast Range. One year, a family of beavers moved in and turned one section of the road into a pond! Not just a little pond, either.

I’ve never run into a “herd” of ducks! Of course, here in northern California the healthy hawk population might keep them at bay.

Oh, I wish we had access to a beach! I love living in the mountains, but an occasional sojourn to a beach would be nice. Fun seeing all those ducks, too.
